That Tunnel

As you know from the background links below, I take a great interest in seeking out and exposing secret underground facilities, therefore I found a recent news story quite extraordinary. On Monday, police were summoned to an address where they probably don't get many calls, the World Headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, one of the world's largest orthodox Jewish sects. The place is known as "770" because it's at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn's Crown Heights, New York City USA. It is a large complex that contains a synagogue, offices and a Yeshiva, a rabbinical seminary. It is also a community hub for the Jewish population in the surrounding city. Some construction workers had arrived there to fill in a mysterious tunnel that had been reported a few weeks earlier. A court had ordered it to be filled with cement seeing as it had been dug without planning permission. The Yeshiva students who had made it were trying to protect it from the workers and so somebody called the cops. The tunnel was considered dangerous. It lacked adequate structure and so could cave in. It was also a hazard to the foundations of neighbouring buildings. The tunnel is about sixty feet long, eight feet wide and five feet high and there seems to be some confusion over what its purpose is. The media is reporting that it was built to connect 770 to some nearby houses; why that would be necessary is not explored. Why can't people just walk across the street? It is possible that its real purpose is some kind of bolt hole for the inhabitants if the synagogue were attacked, in a similar manner to the Pittsburg Tree of Life incident in 2018. Jews have a long tradition of believing that they are constantly under threat of persecution. Sometimes this is for legitimate reasons, other times less so. Either way, they take steps to prepare just in case; and escape tunnels from synagogues were famously used in Russia during the pogroms, a period during the 18th and 19th centuries when Jews were hunted and murdered in huge numbers by lynch mobs. When Jews were cornered in synagogues they used to get away through secret tunnels that led to nearby safe houses. The Yeshiva students in 2023 may have been inspired by their own history. There are only a few pictures from the tunnel and it is clear the place is not intended for accommodation or routine transport. It is dirty and has no proper flooring, walls or roof. Somebody seems to be using it to dump rubbish and there are several broken items of furniture in it. The centre's management have denounced the students as "extremists". The possibility remains that there is something more sinister going on.
